Why: This is a fundraiser for Samdhana-Karana Yoga, a non-profit yoga studio that works to inspire more joy and peace through affordable, accessible yoga offered throughout our entire community.
Where does your money go? To operating our studio on 6th avenue, where we work to make yoga an achievable practice for all by offering classes on a sliding scale and a weekly free community class; and to the expansion of yoga outreach programs in the community, which provide accessible yoga for people in the margins, including folks who are elderly, ill, transient or otherwise disadvantaged. Through accessible and affordable yoga, we work to inspire more joy and peace to our students and our entire community.

How do I participate?
If you would like to be a team captain and build a team of friends, co-workers, family members (or strangers!) fill out the Team Captain Registration Form. If you are an individual who wants to join an existing team or be a team of one, fill out the Individual Registration Form. Then: start collecting donations! Find people to sponsor your team!
How does the fundraiser work?
Team members will do 108 Sun Salutations relay style. The sun salutes will be divided into 9 sets of 12. Teachers and team members will rotate after each set of 12 or whatever number of sun salutations feels best for them.
What is a Sun Salutation?
Sun Salutations are a series of movements liked with the breath that involve contraction and expansion of the body that can be modified to your ability. Watch a youtube video of Shiva Rea doing Sun Salutes.
Why 108?
108 is an auspicious number in the yoga tradition. The number links the sun, moon, and earth: astronomers of ancient India found 108 to be the average distance of the sun and the moon to the earth is 108 times their respective diameters. There are traditionally 108 beads on malas, mantra counting beads, and 108 names for Hindu deities. The number is also significant in numerous religions and spiritual practices.
Do I really have to do 108 Sun Salutations?
Not by yourself—unless you want to! By building or joining a team, however, you will share in the journey by working together to complete 108 Sun Salutations.
How much money should I raise and how?
Requested team goal is $200; requested individual goal is $50. For example - a team of 4 will reach $200 if each team member raises $50. Each team member asks 5 people to donate $10 each or ask 10 people to donate $5 each. And don't stop there! All proceeds support our mission to inspire more joy and peace through affordable, accessible yoga offered throughout our entire community.
